From Earfilter

Wikipedia has a comparison of audio synthesis environments. While Earfilter isn't expected to have synthesis capabilities, most of the environments in the comparison are also capable of processing real-time signals, which is desired for Earfilter!

Of the various packages in the comparison, Csound appears to be the most mature. It has the advantages of being open-source, mature, scriptable with Python, and the platform of choice for the OLPC project's audio system. The latter point ensures a large community of users will continue to exist for some time.
